From Scotland and in Memphis for 3 nights as part of Fly/Drive. First night we stumbled across this Mexican. From the outset we were made to feel very welcome and our waiter Graham was really nice. Street tacos were AMAZING and very fresh. Burritos were tasty and it all came in at a good price. We were also recommended other restaurants for the other days of our stay. Definitely worth a visit

We were looking for Mexican food that didn't break the bank in Memphis and decided to try Agave Maria. It was quite good. My favorite part was the warm, oven roasted salsa. I had 2 street tacos, one was pulled chicken and the other was steak. I also ordered a Mexican street corn. My husband had the steak fajitas. Everything was fresh and delicious. If I lived locally I would be a regular. Everything was clean and decorated cute. The street tacos ran about $3. Nice price!

Unbelievable. Thoroughly enjoyed the tacos. Had pastor and Carne Asada Will be back on Sunday to enjoy one more time while visiting Memphis. The Mixologist Red and Chardonnay were so warm and welcoming. A definite must when visiting downtown Memphis Came back again today and enjoyed another great lunch. 2 days in a row. Food is great. Staff is great! Be back next time in Memphis.

The food and service is always amazing here. The Quarter Margaritas only on Fridays are good and easy to drink. Chips and guacamole are a tasty start to your meal, and the pastor tacos are nice and filling!!

This ain't your typical Mexican restaurant. Think "gourmet tequila pairings", with upper-mid range prices, and professional-grade decor. Very conveniently located two doors down from "Parking Can Be Fun" (you know that was the first place you ever parked downtown) on Union Avenue, the spot is walking distance from almost everywhere downtown- and just a few minutes from the Orpheum, to boot. The most impressive tequila menu I've ever seen was on the back of the menu, and had tequilas by color and aging, priced in increasing order. The bar was charming with some wood-and-leather artful upholstering and accents. Our food was not huge portions with puddles of beans and rice, as we have come to expect in Mexican restaurants, but small, beautiful portions of VERY rich food! I though lobster enchiladas may be on the lighter side, but missed how they were drowning in a thick cream sauce, almost like a lobster bisque. No way could I have finished them- they were salty and rich, and just a few bites of that was satisfying to my palate. The cilantro-lime rice was "meh", and lacked seasoning, in comparison with the other dishes. Elote (two half-cobs of street corn with seasoned mayo and grated cheese), was too saucy and messy, and again- very rich. My husband's tacos were delicious, as was the table's guacamole, served with whole fried tortillas, which you break into your own "chips". Regarding service, ours was very professional and friendly enough without being too chatty. Boyd, our server, will forever be in my gratitude, for returning to me a silver bracelet that fell off my wrist somewhere between the restroom and our table. I thought it was very honest of him to return it to us- not something everyone would do! I recommend this must-try restaurant for a date night, or a fancy girls night out- as prices are a little higher than a casual dinner, and the menu is so caloric. Book them on Open Table!

OMG Stop and read. Ok I'm from California land of Mexican food on every corner. I think I have maybe had gourmet Mexican food once or twice; basically because there isn't really any such thing! I am doing business here and had a craving for Mexican food, I look through yelp and decided on AGAVE MARIA, and I'm glad I did. Downtown restaurant on Union Ave. close to everything. Restaurant is decorated beautifully, great color, Awesome music playing. Was greated by 2 non Spanish speaking wait staff (funny for me). Seated by front window enjoying view and music. Menu comes I'm informed it's tapas style; great ok I can sample lots. Tapas for several people to share! Ok cut to the chase. Food is more than good, it's great bordering on phenomenal for Mexican food! I had the guacamole to start, too much for one person, really good. Short rib dish, and the pork belly. Wow I could go on. If you're here in Memphis and craving/want Mexican food get your butt here! Yes it's gourmet, no it's not expensive!

Absolutely love the kitschy decor at Agave Maria. The bull with the floral necklace was nicknamed Ferdinand. They also feature Memphis music icons in paintings and on candles as saints. Interesting that they do not give free chips and salsa. Their chips are on par in size and taste to Babalu. My friend enjoyed the guacamole. Another friend had a gluten allergy that was accommodated after our server checked with the chef. A couple had margaritas. I had a Carta Blanca. They are known for their tequila selection (100+). We opted not to sample that night. Food was good. We tried a variety of Tacos and a burrito. I did think it was a little on the pricey side. They do have an interesting marketing tool. Take a postcard and mail it to someone. As long as it is postmarked, the bearer will reveal free appetizer.

I work downtown near this place and ate there for the first time today. I lived in Mexico for 3 years ... Thus, have eaten some Mexican food. It's not as authentic as say Las Tortugas / Deli Mexicana .... But it was very good. Much much better than our other local regional Mexican Joints that have been around awhile ( actually no comparison). I had the asada tacos $13 ( eating downtown is getting pricey everywhere) I asked for some salsa and they said there was red and green eyes b the table ( bottles on the table... Oh). But you know what , I liked them both. Both had a pretty good kick which I always like. We had the fundido appetizer... It was good I'd recommend the place... The atmosphere was great too. They did a nice job putting it together

What a fun addition to the downtown scene! Details below on my visit. Overall though, it's worth checking out at least once. I'm cheering for this place and have no doubt that if they make a few tweaks they will surely have a strong downtown crowd following! Location: It's located on Union Ave and extends the Local/Aldo/Oshi cluster of restaurants on that stretch of Main St. It's conveniently located next to the Parking Can Be Fun parking garage which makes for easy in and out visits for nondowntowners. Ambiance: The decor is unbelievable. Very trendy and unlike anything else downtown. Cool Spanish flair, with funky colored lights and a beautiful bull head in the main dining room with a wreath of roses around its neck. Sleek, sexy, and fun. It would work for a fancy date night, as well as a weeknight casual happy hour. Service: The service was okay. The wait staff was adequately attentive, however they weren't always on top of refilling beverages. Food: The food was very tasty. We ordered several dishes, the ceviche, the scallops, beef tacos, and queso. The food was fresh and prepared wonderfully. Really enjoyed the ceviche!!! I will say that the scallops had a relish or sauce on it that did not compliment them very well. I ended up wiping off this sauce because it took away from the taste of the scallops. They were, however, VERY well cooked! When dessert rolled around I was disappointed that they only had one dessert option. Clearly dessert is not where they are trying to make their money at this time. Along the lines of food, I will say that it appears this restaurant is aiming for a tapas concept. This could, however, use some revamping. The menu lists three to four different types of plates you can order, one is labeled tapas. The reality is, based on my experience, is that all of the sections are tapas portions. It is confusing to consumers and when we asked the waiter for clarification he was unable to help us better understand how the menu was set up. Bottom line -all items appear to be tapas portions. Also, they don't serve complimentary chips and salsa. I really hope they change this. As the theme of the next section will explain, for the price point of this place- chips and salsa should be complimentary. Value: This is where I feel Agave Maria falls short. All of the items appeared to be tapas size, however the prices did not reflect typical tapas prices. For what you get, I believe that the prices are pretty high. This sadly makes me want to get more bang for my buck (with equivalent quality) elsewhere and/or only come here once in awhile. With lowered prices or increased portions, though, I believe this place could have a strong following among many Memphians! Other thoughts...I sadly did not try any margaritas. They did have a huge list of drinks and tequilas, though. I look forward to coming in again for a drink. Also, they may want to reconsider the sizes of either their plates or tables. With two tapas plates each between me and my date, plus queso and the standard stuff on the table - our plates were almost hanging off the table. No one wants to feel cramped at a table, especially when you are paying as much as this place costs for a full meal. Again, with some minor changes I think this place has limitless potential in the downtown scene.
